General

The Yaroslavl Region is situated in the central industrial area of the Russian Federation and occupies 36,400 km2. Out of 1,411,900 of the regional population, 82% lives in 11 cities and 16 towns. Yaroslavl, the major city, has 616,700 inhabitants. Federal automobile roads and railroads as well as river ways pass through Yaroslavl. The regional territory is subdivided into 19 municipal districts.


The Yaroslavl regional educational system counts:
  • 561 pre-school establishments,
  • 573 secondary comprehensive schools,
  • 45 initial vocational and 29 advanced vocational schools,
  • 116 establishments for additional education,
  • 38 universities and institutes including branches, and
  • 85 private schools.

The regional economy has begun to show signs of revival since early 2000. Industries, small and medium-size businesses, commerce, services and tourism now actively develop. Changes in the regional economy and social sphere spontaneously form a new order to the educational system. The program of development for the Yaroslavl Region, called From Surviving to Well-being, has identified education as the most important development factor of the formation of market economy and new cultural values within the regional community. These new cultural values are: freedom of choice, self-dependent activities, entrepreneurships and responsibility for social life.
